The Breakfast Roundtable is an opportunity for us to kick-off the conference sessions with engaging conversation, delving deeply into our conference theme, Success: A Journey Not a Destination, while enjoying a buffet breakfast. Whether you’re navigating the challenges of work-life balance, completing challenging classes, designing a study, working to save a species, driving change, or simply finding your path in today’s complex world, this theme is meant to resonate. We invite you to explore this in more depth to discuss how we perceive success and failure as wildlife professionals and how we can view and/or reframe these concepts to ultimately achieve our goals.

All conference attendees are welcome and encouraged to register, no prior knowledge or experience is required. The more diverse the participation, the more diverse the conversation.

Wednesday Morning Session 8am – 9:30am

We will begin with a short introduction followed by a brainstorm focused on our interpretations of success versus failure, a discussion about what we can learn, then conclude with actions we can take.  We will use the World Cafe method to facilitate this session; it encourages collaborative problem solving and the consideration of multiple perspectives through dialogue around questions that matter.  Participants will start at small tables, then change tables over several discussion rounds.  We will conclude the session by coming back together to share highlights.

Round #1

Brainstorming within the wildlife profession: How do we define success?  What constitutes failure?

Round #2

What can we learn from the components of success and failure identified in the brainstorm?

  • If viewed from a different perspective, such as different environments (e.g. academia, public sector, or private sector), could success/failure be interpreted differently?
  • What are the risks of focusing too much on success or too much on failure?

Round #3

What actions can we, as members of the wildlife community, and society in general, take to build empathy, compassion, and understanding to help build the support we all need when facing challenges and communicating our successes?
